Psychiatric evidence of suicide risk and serious deterioration in custody, combined with impaired capacity to appreciate wrongfulness, guilty plea, and absence of prior convictions, may justify wholly suspended imprisonment even for indecent assault offences against young children that would ordinarily attract actual custody. The comparable sentencing range for such offences with a guilty plea is 18 months to 3 years with parole before the halfway point.
