Section 74(7) of the Criminal Law Consolidation Act 1935 (SA) does not change the established sentencing approach for courses of sexual conduct; the court should sentence as if dealing with representative counts rather than accumulating statutory maxima for each individual offence. For future cases of persistent sexual abuse of a child by a person in a position of trust, the starting point for head sentences should be approximately 12 years for offences involving children under 12 and approximately 10 years for children over 12, subject to reduction for mitigating factors.
