Life imprisonment is appropriate for the worst examples of carnal knowledge of a child under 12, particularly where the offence involves extreme brutality against a very young child, the offender has a significant history of violent conduct, shows no remorse, and psychiatric evidence indicates a high risk of reoffending. The indeterminate nature of a life sentence, even for an Aboriginal offender who particularly values freedom, does not render it manifestly excessive in such circumstances.
