A sentencing judge cannot impose a single sentence of imprisonment for multiple different offences; separate terms must be imposed for each offence. The totality principle is applied through the mechanism of concurrent or cumulative sentences, not through a single global sentence. Where a single sentence has been imposed for multiple offences, the sentencing discretion has miscarried.
