A total sentence of ten years imprisonment (minimum seven and a half years) for eight sexual offences by a teacher against five pupils over approximately five years, where individual sentences were set at half the applicable maximum and two were made cumulative, was not disproportionate to the objective criminality. The passage of approximately ten years between the offences and sentencing is a material consideration but does not necessarily reduce the sentence below such a level. The sentencing judge is not required to recite character evidence in detail provided a general reference indicates it was taken into account.
