A police officer is a 'public justice official' for the purposes of ss 322 and 326 of the Crimes Act 1900 (NSW). However, the act of arresting a person is not conduct 'in or in connection with any judicial proceeding' because the statutory purpose requires a connection of similar quality to that between a witness, juror or judicial officer and the proceeding — the provision protects against conduct that may detrimentally affect the conduct of judicial proceedings, not merely their commencement. An arrest, though a necessary preliminary step, is not part of the conduct of judicial proceedings.
