General deterrence is always a very important factor in sentencing for manslaughter arising from the breakdown of a domestic relationship, and courts must impose substantial terms of imprisonment to convey that physical violence is not an option when relationships end. This applies equally to female offenders. Considerations relating to the custody of children of the offender are a distraction from the proper sentencing process and should not moderate the sentence. A sentence of nine years with parole after three years for shooting a retreating former partner was manifestly inadequate; ten years without parole recommendation was substituted.
