A total effective sentence of seven years' imprisonment (with three-and-a-half year non-parole period) for culpable driving causing death and negligently causing serious injury was upheld under the 20-year maximum penalty regime, where the driver was intoxicated, drove at excessive speed, and struck innocent pedestrians. General deterrence must be emphasised for culpable driving offences notwithstanding the youth of the offender. The maximum penalty of five years for negligently causing serious injury was judicially criticised as too low.
