Where the prosecution relies on evasive or untruthful answers in a police interview as evidence of consciousness of guilt, the trial judge must give full Edwards directions: identifying the specific lies, instructing the jury that lies may only be used as admissions if they reveal knowledge of the offence and were told because the truth would implicate the accused, and warning that there may be innocent explanations for lies. A generalised reference to 'consciousness of guilt' is insufficient.
