In multi-complainant sexual assault trials, a direction to consider each charge separately is insufficient; the trial judge must give an explicit Mitchell direction warning the jury not to use the evidence of one complainant towards proof of charges involving the other. A Longman direction warning of the danger of convicting on uncorroborated evidence must be given where there is significant delay in complaint, and must include the specific warning that it is dangerous to convict unless the jury, after carefully scrutinising the evidence, is satisfied of its truth and accuracy.
