A judge trying a criminal case without a jury under s 7 of the Juries Act 1927 (SA) must give reasons for the verdict, and failure to give adequate reasons is an error of law. The reasons must explain the use made of evidence of uncharged acts and whether evidence on one count was used in proof of another, but need not replicate the full directions that would be given to a jury. The extent of the obligation depends on the circumstances and issues in the case.
