Immediate imprisonment is ordinarily appropriate for arson offences except in the most exceptional circumstances; R v Perrone should not be cited as authority for a non-custodial sentence. Lies about whereabouts at the time of an offence are available as evidence of consciousness of guilt and should not be confined to credit where the case is clear; a relatively simple direction will suffice.
