A sentence for recklessly causing serious injury by stabbing may be manifestly inadequate where the offender has an extensive history of violent offending, has repeatedly failed to respond to community-based orders and leniency, committed the offences shortly after completing a combined custody and treatment order for similar offences, and used a knife to stab victims from behind causing life-threatening injuries. The court's discretion to decline to interfere on a Director's appeal will not be exercised merely because the respondent has been released on parole where the inadequacy is sufficiently grave.
