A single act of sexual penetration of the vagina by the penis will commonly attract a sentence of about 6 years' imprisonment, and approximately 8 years where accompanied by the aggravation that the complainant is under 16, but there is no tariff for sexual assault offences. The absence of intimidation, force, and premeditation, combined with significant personal mitigating factors, may justify a sentence well below the usual range without constituting manifest inadequacy.
