Where photographs are of material assistance to a jury in determining an important question left for their decision, it will ordinarily be difficult for a defendant to contend that the jury should not see them merely because of their graphic or distressing nature. A sentence of 12 years' imprisonment for unlawfully doing grievous bodily harm with intent to maim, disfigure or disable, where the offender deliberately set his wife alight with mineral turpentine in the presence of young children, is within the permissible range notwithstanding that it exceeds sentences imposed in some attempted murder cases.
