Where a solicitor negligently fails to advise about a limitation period, the plaintiff must demonstrate that the underlying action had value — that is, that the plaintiff would have succeeded or had a real chance of success in the original proceedings. Medical evidence raising only a possibility of causal connection, without justifying an inference of probable connection, is insufficient to establish causation on the balance of probabilities.
