A sentencing judge must expressly advert to and give appropriate weight to an early plea of guilty and a confession made before police approach, and failure to do so in reasons for sentence is indicative of error warranting appellate intervention. Where offences would have been discovered in any event and proof would have been relatively easy, the discount for a guilty plea should reflect the utilitarian value of the plea rather than any contrition element.
