Where a jury acquits on some counts of a multi-count sexual offence indictment based on the uncorroborated evidence of a single complainant, and the most likely explanation for the acquittal is that the complainant's evidence was found to lack cogency when tested against other evidence, convictions on remaining counts cannot stand unless there is a valid reason why the complainant's evidence could be regarded as more reliable on those counts. A direction that doubt about the complainant's reliability on one count should be taken into account on remaining counts is desirable in such cases.
