A Longman direction is required where the Crown case depends on the evidence of a complainant and there has been lengthy delay between the alleged offences and the first complaint. The direction must warn the jury to scrutinise the complainant's evidence with considerable care and alert them to the difficulties the accused faces in defending himself after such delay. Failure to give the direction will result in the conviction being set aside even where the Crown case was not weak.
