The fact that an applicant will serve a substantial part of a custodial sentence before an appeal is heard is only one factor in the exceptional reasons assessment and cannot alone justify bail where the appeal grounds are not particularly strong. A Longman direction may not be required where the delay between offence and complaint is measured in weeks or months rather than years or decades.
