Where a plaintiff suffers from both accident-caused injuries and an unrelated concurrent condition such as multiple sclerosis, the trial judge must distinguish between the effects of each condition in assessing damages. An allowance of four hours daily gratuitous care for future Griffiths v Kerkemeyer damages may be excessive where future disability may partly stem from the unrelated condition. A buffer for future economic loss must adequately reflect the serious impact of accident-caused disabilities on career prospects, including delayed completion of academic qualifications.
