In a solicitors' negligence claim for failure to advise a client to obtain a building report, the client must establish that she relied on the solicitors for such advice and would have acted on it. Where the client is an experienced property purchaser who acted with haste and independence, and gave no direct evidence of reliance, the trial judge is entitled to find that the advice would have been otiose and causation is not established. A party cannot expand the case on appeal beyond the way it was conducted at trial.
