The Edwards direction on lies is not a code requiring enumeration of all possible reasons for lying; where the accused has advanced a specific explanation for admitted lies, a direction that the jury cannot use the lies as evidence of guilt unless satisfied beyond reasonable doubt that the explanation is untrue is sufficient. The question whether a prosecutor should be permitted to cross-examine his own witness is peculiarly within the province of the trial judge and will not be interfered with on appeal except in very exceptional circumstances.
