Where a solicitor's negligence in failing to maintain a security registration results in a client being required to pay money that would not otherwise have been payable, compound interest may be awarded as damages for loss of use of that money without proof that the solicitor knew of the client's financial affairs. However, a solicitor's negligence in failing to maintain registration does not cause loss of proceeds to which the client had no entitlement under the security instrument even if it had been registered.
