For multiple serious sexual offences against young children involving penile anal and oral penetration, a total effective sentence of 8 years' imprisonment with parole eligibility is within the appropriate range, even where many offences were committed while the offender was a juvenile. Suspended sentences are not appropriate for such offences because the aggregate terms will exceed 60 months. The dominant sentencing considerations in child sexual assault cases are general and personal deterrence and the protection of vulnerable young children, and mitigatory factors carry less weight than in other cases.
