An employer bank's duty of care to its employees extends to taking reasonable care to protect them from the foreseeable risk of armed robbery, including ensuring that employees are not left unprotected while in possession of large sums of cash in public areas. A security expert may give evidence on the protection afforded by particular security devices but may not opine on the ultimate question of whether the employer breached its duty to provide a safe system of work. The admissibility of such expert evidence is governed by s 79 of the Evidence Act 1995, requiring the opinion to be wholly or substantially based on specialised knowledge.
