In a single-issue trial, a trial judge is not required to separately relate evidence relevant to multiple sub-issues of the sole defence to each sub-issue, particularly where neither counsel suggested such division. A Zoneff direction on lies is not required where the lies were never suggested to be evidence of guilt and were used only on credibility. Substantial compliance with s 165(2) of the Evidence Act 1995 may be sufficient where the evidence in question was not a major issue at trial.
