The strength of the Crown case is relevant only to the contrition element of a guilty plea discount, not to the utilitarian discount. Delay in sentencing caused by the offender's desire to have matters dealt with together is irrelevant to the utilitarian discount and may entitle the offender to leniency. An offender who absconds after pleading guilty cannot expect the full utilitarian discount because the disruption to the court process and administration of justice caused by the absconding must be weighed against the utilitarian benefit of the plea.
