Pre-trial publicity arising from prior convictions for similar offences, combined with a delay of more than 30 years, does not necessarily require a permanent stay where the publicity does not relate to the charges at trial and appropriate jury directions can be given. Evidence of uncharged similar acts showing an 'unnatural and abnormal passion' by the accused for the complainant is admissible as supporting the complainant's evidence. A guilty verdict on one count is not inconsistent with an acquittal on another where the complainant's evidence was specific and consistent on the first count but confused on the second.
