The strength of the Crown case is irrelevant to the utilitarian value of a plea of guilty and must not be used to reduce the discount. Where an offender makes full admissions, pleads guilty at the first opportunity, and spares the victim from giving evidence, the discount should be at or towards the top of the 10%–25% range identified in Thomson & Houlton.
