Where multiple offences are committed against different victims over an extended episode, full concurrency of all sentences may result in manifest inadequacy even if individual sentences are within range. The totality principle requires partial accumulation to reflect the distinct criminality against each victim. The Pearce methodology of fixing individual sentences then considering accumulation applies mandatorily in NSW, though other Australian jurisdictions have not adopted it in the same way.
