For a single offence of digital anal penetration of a young child by a youthful offender who pleads guilty early, a head sentence of three years imprisonment (suspended after 12 months) is within range. The reclassification of digital penetration from indecent treatment (10 years maximum) to rape (life imprisonment maximum) under the October 2000 amendments does not result in more than approximately a doubling of previously imposed sentences.
