An out-of-court confession by a co-accused is admissible against the confessor regardless of whether it is tendered by the prosecution or by the other co-accused; a statement against interest has that character irrespective of the object or interest of the party tendering it. The court also signalled that a reliability test should be adopted as a condition of admissibility for out-of-court third-party confessions in Queensland, though this was obiter. An Edwards or Zoneff direction regarding lies is not required where the prosecution does not contend that lies are evidence of guilt and no such direction is sought at trial.
