Where an offender's cooperation with police reveals offences that would not otherwise have been detected, combined with early guilty pleas, contrition and remorse, a reduction of the order of one third is appropriate. The totality principle must be applied as the final step in the sentencing process, after reductions for mitigating circumstances including guilty pleas. When sentencing for multiple related offences under s 18A, the preferred approach is to consider the total criminality as a course of conduct rather than artificially grouping offences by information.
