The expression 'directly caused by' in a private insurance policy invokes the proximate cause rule and does not require the insured peril to be the immediate or most temporally proximate cause of the loss. The adverb 'directly' does not exclude intervening steps between the cause and the consequence. The HCA decision in Container Handlers, which concerned a statutory compulsory third party insurance policy, does not alter this position for private insurance contracts.
