Sentencing judges may calculate multiple discounts (for pleas of guilty and assistance to authorities) using either the successive method or the aggregate method; neither is the only correct approach. However, the method adopted should be made clear, and any discount for promised future assistance should be specifically quantified — preferably in years and months rather than percentages — to facilitate Crown applications under s 5DA of the Criminal Appeal Act 1912.
