The commonly accepted range for a discount for a plea of guilty is 10-25%, with no presumption that even an early plea will attract a 25% discount. A sentencing judge may consider the strength of the Crown case in assessing the element of remorse indicated by a plea, as distinct from the utilitarian value of the plea. Where agreed facts suggest the plea was entered at the earliest opportunity but the true sequence of events shows otherwise, the sentencing judge is entitled to give little weight to the agreed characterisation.
