Drug addiction is not a mitigating factor in sentencing, even where the offender commenced drug use as a teenager in response to personal crises. Whatever significance might attach to the circumstances of initial drug use is lost where the offender voluntarily leaves rehabilitation and resumes drug use. The absence of appreciation that drug use might lead to violence is not mitigatory; had such appreciation existed, it would have been seriously aggravating.
