Deterrence is the paramount sentencing consideration for unprovoked violent street offending in city areas at night. The appropriate head sentence range for grievous bodily harm without a weapon in such circumstances, after allowing for a guilty plea and mitigation, is three to four years' imprisonment. Sentencing judges revising transcripts of sentencing remarks may only correct errors in transcription, spelling, punctuation, grammar, syntax, citations or other obvious errors, provided the change would not significantly alter the meaning conveyed in court.
