Where a child complainant gives materially inconsistent accounts of sexual abuse across multiple interviews, with bizarre and improbable elements and no corroborating evidence for objectively verifiable allegations, it is not open to a jury to convict beyond reasonable doubt on the complainant's evidence alone. Medical evidence of general sexual abuse that is not linked to the specific charged offences cannot support convictions on those charges, and the jury should be directed accordingly.
