When a sentencing judge imposes a single sentence under s 18A of the Criminal Law (Sentencing) Act 1988 (SA) without attributing notional sentences to each offence, the totality principle has little or no part to play because the judge necessarily has regard to the total period of imprisonment. The totality principle cannot be invoked as a routine basis for reducing an otherwise appropriate sentence. Rehabilitation, while important, is not the dominant consideration for prevalent property offences where deterrence is significant.
