A head sentence that is within range may nonetheless produce a manifestly excessive total effective sentence when cumulated upon earlier sentences. The totality principle requires modification of cumulation where the aggregate would be crushing — meaning it would provoke a feeling of helplessness or destroy any reasonable expectation of useful life after release. The court may intervene on this basis even where the sentencing judge made no specific error and turned his mind to cumulation.
