A release of 'all claims, actions and causes of action' relating to proceedings extends to preclude reliance on the same matters as a defence to a cross-claim in those proceedings, where the defence is framed by way of set-off or relies on the released cause of action. However, a true defence that directly negatives the opponent's right to claim (such as an unfulfilled condition precedent) may not be barred by such a release.
