Shearing shed owners with raised shearing boards are required, absent exceptional circumstances, to install guardrails generally complying with Australian Standard 1657-1985 as a reasonable response to the foreseeable risk of falls. The obviousness of the risk of falling from a raised platform may be nullified by the dynamics of an accident involving equipment malfunction. A trial judge's failure to give adequate reasons for limiting an award for gratuitous care services, where medical evidence supports an ongoing need, constitutes appellable error.
