When sentencing for offences with standard non-parole periods, the assessment of whether the offence falls within the mid-range of objective seriousness must be confined to factors relating to the offence itself (including the offender's state of mind), and must not include subjective factors relating to the offender such as criminal record, prospects of rehabilitation, or conditions of custody. The victim's age approaching the upper limit of the statutory age range, and the fact that the offence was an isolated act rather than part of a pattern, do not preclude a finding that the offence is in the mid-range.
