Where a plaintiff suffers from both compensable and non-compensable conditions, the court must separately identify the consequences of the compensable injury and make findings about its long-term effects; if the compensable injury meets the serious injury test, it is irrelevant that another condition might also satisfy the test. A trial judge's reasons must disclose a clear path of reasoning connecting credibility findings to conclusions of fact, and credibility findings based on a misapprehension of the evidence will not be sustained on appeal.
