A confession made to an undercover police operative posing as a criminal gang boss is not rendered involuntary merely because the operative offered inducements of gang membership and financial rewards, where the accused was repeatedly told he could walk away and chose of his own free will to confess. The reliability of such confessions is properly a matter for the jury where there is material supporting their reliability. A sentence of life imprisonment with a 25-year non-parole period is within range for the murder of a child involving sexual assault, even where the offender has demonstrated some rehabilitation in the intervening decades, particularly where the delay was caused by the offender's concealment.
