Cases of historical sexual offending against children by persons in positions of trust are not to be regarded as exceptional merely because the offending occurred long ago and the offender has since rehabilitated; such cases occur too frequently for that characterisation. General deterrence and denunciation remain of the first importance in sentencing for such offences. Unsuccessful Crown appeals against sentence do not establish sentencing tariffs.
