A court's obligation in giving reasons is to expose the essentials of its reasoning process; there is no requirement to deal with every detail of argument or to discuss every case cited. The maxim generalia specialibus non derogant is not an invariable rule and does not displace the fundamental task of ascertaining statutory meaning from the statute as a whole. Where a court dismisses a 'summons' when it intended to dismiss 'proceedings', this is correctable under the slip rule (r 36.17 UCPR).
