The parity principle requires appellate intervention where co-offenders with virtually identical subjective circumstances and comparable culpability receive irrationally different sentences, even where the sentence under challenge is within the permissible range. A voluntary disclosure of guilt made during police interview, though at a lesser level than voluntary surrender, should be taken into account in sentencing. Post-sentence assistance (such as giving evidence at a co-offender's trial) may be taken into account on re-sentencing.
